Sidewinder is a club night that has continually pushed MCs, many of whom are regularly featured in the mainstream charts today. Wiley, Dizzee Rascal, Skepta, Wretch 32 and Scorcher are just a few names that have graced the Sidewinder stage at some point in their career. The legendary club night has now been going for twelve years, and they’re heading to the town of Northampton this coming Saturday (April 23) to celebrate in style. Joseph ‘JP’ Patterson caught up with Spruce (the owner of Sidewinder) to talk the past, the present and the very bright future of the Sidewinder brand…
The Wrap Up: Spruce! How does it feel to be twelve years deep in the promotions game?
Spruce: It doesn’t even feel like twelve years, because we’ve been constantly evolving. It always feels like we’re on to something new. We really appreciate the fact that people still enjoy what we do and kind of hope we can continue for another twelve years.
TWU: You’re holding a big event for Sidewinder’s 12th birthday this Saturday, right? What are your hopes for it and why did you decide to hold it in Northampton?
Spruce: I hope that all the people that come and celebrate with us all have a totally epic night and that the event goes off with the usual Sidewinder vibe! Northampton was the starting point for Sidewinder and people always ask when we are gonna bring the event home, so we thought our 12th birthday would be a perfect time. We have a very good working relationship with the club, Roadmender, and it’s a perfect venue for an event like this.
TWU: Okay, so what are your plans for the Sidewinder brand in the near future?
Spruce: We have just done the line-up for the next event and all I’m gonna say is after the massive sold-out event in Leicester, we will be returning! We’ve also got another three venues that we’re looking to use; we just want to get the music policy right for each town/city. We’re currently negotiating with different companies to get Sidewinder abroad this year, but we have very tight regulations on the use of the brand, so it’s very hard to get the right people in place who share our vision. But anyway, big up all Sidewinder supporters, big up all the Sidewinder team, Highrise, Invasion and S.R.E!
